Politico is reporting the project to extend NJ Transit’s Hudson-Bergen Light Rail into Bergen County is moving forward now that the federal government has authorized the publication of a new draft Environmental Impact Statement. The project extends the existing light rail service (which ends in North Bergen, Hudson County) into Bergen County with more than a half dozen new stations planned. The line will terminate at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center.
Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (Bergen County) said,
“I am excited, on behalf of the residents that we represent, for what this means in terms of spurring the economy, not only in the building of it, but the transportation infrastructure if offers to residents.”
NJ Transit claims that only 17% of Bergen County commuters use rail compared to over 50% of commuters in Morris, Middlesex, Essex, and Union counties. Increased use of rail in Bergen County will reduce commuter traffic on the county’s roads.
